First Glimpse: Knight of Grey
by Seamus King
“Yes,” a voice hissed from nowhere. “It is. Nothing is gained without sacrifice.”
“But they were innocent.”
“No one is truly innocent,” the voice said, its raspy voice like a serpent passing over rough stone..
The woman could almost see it there, standing in the shadows, but she knew that was untrue. She doubted the thing even had a physical form.
She shook her head. “But this is wrong.”
“Is it?”
“This is murder.”
“And what will happen if you don’t is much, much worse. Do not let your need for absolute purity derail you from getting your hands a little dirty.”
She tightened her lips. The stench of the blood was growing.
“Besides, the deed is done. You can’t bring them back. Not anymore.” She could hear the smug sneer in its sibilant whisper. “Now. Begin the ritual so their bloody lives are not wasted. That would only compound the sin.”
The woman took a deep breath and cleared her mind. She began drawing the elf-rune with the fresh-spilled blood, focusing her thoughts and intentions as she bound magic to the shadows.
The elf was going to die.
